How to Make Carp Bait With Bread?

One of the earliest carp baits was bread. Today, it’s not used as much as before, but it can still be found on anglers’ hooks here and there. Let’s check out how to make carp bait with bread.

Why is Bread a Popular Choice for Carp Bait?

There are two main reasons. Anyone who is into carp fishing knows that carp are attracted to certain scents and certain textures. The natural scent of bread makes it an attractive fishing bait. On the other hand, the texture of it allows us to play around and create all types of baits. From bread bombs and bread paste to bread balls which can be placed directly on the hook.

Another reason why bread is popular is, of course, price. A whole loaf of bread won’t cost you more than two euros. Even if you buy the one with the mix cornmeal. Bakery or supermarkets can be found almost everywhere which makes it easily accessible as well.

Different Types of Bread Suitable for Carp Bait

All kinds of bread can be used as a bit, but there are the ones that are most suitable.

Stale Bread

The most common type of bread used for carp bait. Even if you are family is not a wasteful one, you’ll have some stale bread at your house sooner or later. Instead of throwing it straight into the trash bin, you can use it to make fresh bread crumbs.

Sweet Cornbread

Cornbread is another commonly used type of bread for carp bait. It’s made of sweet corn, flour, milk, sugar, and other ingredients which are extremely attractive to carp. In the end, a lot of these ingredients are used to make carp boilies.

Yellow Cornmeal Bread

Everything said for sweet cornbread can be said for this one as well. Yellow cornmeal bread with a spoon of honey or a tablespoon of vanilla extract can do wonders with the splash of lake water. It will dissolve nicely and attract carp just like any store-bought method carp mix.

Preparing the Bread for Carp Bait

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to prepare the bread. The same steps can be applied regardless of what type of bait you want to make.

  1. Take stale bread (or the one you made specifically for carp). How many pieces of bread you’ll use depends on how long you’ll be on the water and if you want to create a feeding spot or not. Logically, if you mean to create a spot with the bread, you’ll need a lot of it.
  2. The next step is to soak the bread in cold water. You can put the slices of bread directly under the tap water, or you can fill a bowl. If you use a bowl, you can add additional ingredients such as boosters, hemp seed, oils, and such.
  3. As you soak the bread, you should roll it into dough balls immediately. While you are doing it, make sure that you squeeze out any excess water. Wet bread won’t do you much good on either the hook or as an attractor because it will dissolve in water too fast.
  4. Once you are happy with the texture of your bait, let them rest for a while.
  5. Store your bait in the bread bags (with ziplock if possible)

That’s all there is to it! You are ready to take your bait with you on the next fishing trip.

Making Different Forms of Carp Bait With Bread

Dough Balls: A Classic Choice for Carp Fishing

The most common bait. It can be placed directly on the hook, catapulted into the water with the feed slingshot, used in a caged feeder, or thrown into water directly from hand. There are countless possibilities and you’ll be surprised that catching fish with bread is actually a viable, effective, and easy-to-do method.

Bread Flakes: An Alternative Way to Present Bread as a Bait

Instead of making balls, you can use flakes as well. Simply tear a piece of bread and put it on a hook. Make sure that hook point is slightly visible. That way you can be sure that fish will be hooked once it takes the bait and the bread flake won’t fall of easily when it gets in touch with a body of water.

Bread Paste: A Sticky Bait Option for Attracting Carp

Paste is excellent because it can be mixed with a variety of ingredients to boost its attractiveness. Just moisturaize the bread enough so you can create a paste out of it and add brown sugar, your favorite aroma, some hemp oil, or whatever else you think is nice addition for your bait.

Bread Crumbs: A Versatile Form of Bait for Various Fishing Techniques

Lastly, we have bread crumbs. You can use them in several ways. Throw them into the water, put them into sticky mix, or use them as a bread hook bait (for smaller hooks). Just remember that crumb of bread is pretty small so don’t expect 40lb fish to take the bait.

Checking Fishing Regulations for Specific Waters

Make sure you are aware of fishing regulations on the lake or river where you plan to fish with bread. Some venues restricted the use of bread because people were irresponsible and they used moldy bread which caused issues with the water quality, thus endangering all wildlife, not just the fish.

I hope you’ll find this article helpful and that you’ll try this old school bait on your next fishing trip.
